Course Tour

Course Description

Students participate in the process of learning to create clear, concise, effective writing specific to audience. After successful completion of Composition I or its equivalent, this course provides students with further development in their understanding of the research, writing and documentation processes, in preparation for employment or higher-level coursework. By reflecting on and evaluating their own and others' writing and critical thinking strategies, students interact through the stages of the writing process. This online course emphasizes the strategies of lesson sequencing and learner engagement. The instruction of the course relies on a variety of collaborative methods for learner-to-learner and instructor-to-student interaction with ongoing feedback.

...From the Author

“Through participation in the Exemplary Course Program, I’ve been challenged in my role as a course developer and instructor to evaluate the core areas of course design, learner interaction and collaboration, and assessment along with learner support. The two-part review process of self-scoring followed by a formal review team evaluation promotes a dedication to high standards, requiring an intensive self-evaluation of how a course is designed and facilitated. I’m honored to represent OTC Online with its commitment to excellence in course development and delivery. The Exemplary Course Program truly encompasses the use of best practices to promote student success.” - Carla Bradley, Coordinator of Online Instructional Development; Course Developer and Instructor

Best Practices

Easy to follow

  • Course design in the areas of goals and objectives and content presentation is very thorough. Learning is enabled by clear directions that located with each area – dropbox, discussion, blogs, etc. Students are given rubrics, guidelines, resources and check lists to self-assess their work before submitting.
  • The assessment design, divided into individual and group work, acommodates different learning styles.
  • The Modules are easily to follow and the lessons contain goals and objectives with assessments that measure the objectives. The lesson checklist in each module helps to keep students on pace.

Guidance from the instructor

  • The instructor adds hints and bulleted points to guide the students through the material, additions that make the course more user-friendly.
  • Students know they are not in the class alone – the instructor is available and sets the tone of cooperation and student community.
